Fontana Indy Lights: Sage Karam takes title, Carlos Munoz wins

Third place in the Indy Lights season finale proved to be enough to Sage Karam to secure the 2013 series title over Schmidt team-mate Gabby Chaves

Despite some early scrapping, with the lead cars running three wide during the opening laps, the race was mostly one of cat and mouse.

Carlos Munoz took the lead ahead of Chaves early on, and Chaves spent much of the afternoon stalking the Andretti car in the hope of passing it and gaining extra points.

He was unsuccessful, leaving Munoz to take his fourth win of the year.

Karam, meanwhile, was aware that third would be enough for him to secure the crown regardless, and was largely content to sit a second or so behind the lead pair to preserve his position. His final margin over Chaves was 11 points.

"I can't explain it," said Karam. "I was crying on that last lap, just to know the dream is almost in reach. The team just put together an awesome car week-in, week-out. I can't thank them enough."

Polesitter Zach Veach finished fourth, while the only incident of note occurred when Jack Hawksworth was forced to pit with a problem.

He was eventually able to rejoin, but not before losing several laps having his car's ECU replaced.
