Dario Franchitti underwent further surgery on his injured right ankle on Monday.
The Ganassi driver suffered fractures to his ankle and vertebrae as well as concussion in a horrific accident on the final lap of the Houston IndyCar race earlier this month.
A three-hour operation to repair his talus bone was completed successfully, according to IndyCar's orthopaedic consultant Dr Terry Trammel.
"Dr Tim Weber repaired Dario's ankle and his surgery went perfectly and just as planned," said Dr Trammel.
"His post-operation x-rays looked great. Everything is positive at this point as Dario continues his recovery."
Alex Tagliani will replace Franchitti for the IndyCar finale at Fontana this weekend.
