NASCAR monitoring Travis Kvapil situation after assault arrest

Travis Kvapil

NASCAR says it is "monitoring" the situation regarding driver Travis Kvapil following his arrest on assault charges.

Kvapil, who drives a BK Racing Toyota in the Sprint Cup Series, was arrested on domestic violence charges on Tuesday evening by police in Mooresville, North Carolina. He was released on bail next morning.

BK co-owner Ron Devine indicated to FOX Sports that Kvapil would drive in this weekend's Charlotte round despite the charges.

But NASCAR issued a statement on Thursday saying it wanted more information about the incident.

"NASCAR does not condone the actions with which Travis Kvapil has been charged and we are disappointed to learn of this incident," it said.

"We have been in close communication with the race team and are in the process of gathering as much information as possible.

"NASCAR takes this matter very seriously and will continue to monitor the situation as it moves forward."

Kvapil won the Truck Series title in 2003 but has been a midfielder in his nine seasons at Cup level, with a best career result of 23rd in the 2008 championship for Yates Racing.
