Former Sauber F1 reserve Robin Frijns makes management changes

Robin Frijns 2013

Former Sauber reserve driver Robin Frijns has made changes to his management team in a bid to revive his Formula 1 hopes.

The reigning Formula Renault 3.5 champion signed up as Sauber's third driver at the end of last year, but that agreement has come to an end in the wake of the team's Russian investment which is likely to lead to Sergey Sirotkin racing for it in 2014.

Frijns has also made 12 starts in GP2 this year - including a victory in just his third race - but he has been in and out of the Hilmer Motorsport line-up due to a lack of budget.

He has now joined forces with Dutch company Just Sports Marketing in a bid to boost his chances of landing sufficient funding to increase his appeal to F1 and GP2 teams.

"I feel this is a good step," said Frijns, who has driven for Sauber and Red Bull in the last two Formula 1 young driver tests.

"After some eventful weeks I am happy that we are moving forwards again and doors are opening.

"I want to focus on my performance in the car and it gives me comfort that my management is reinforced in this way."

Following the restructure, Frijns's manager Werner Heinz will remain responsible for the "sporting side" of his career.

Speaking after Sauber decided not to retain Frijns, team principal Monisha Kaltenborn suggested that his management needed to work harder on coming up with a commercial package for the 22-year-old.
