Sebastien Ogier has lost the Rally Germany lead after going off the road on the first Friday stage.
The World Rally Championship leader had edged clear of his rivals on Thursday evening's pair of stages, but missed his braking point early on the Mittelmosel test and went off into the vineyard.
Ogier lost two and a half minutes as he dragged his Volkswagen to the stage finish.
He is now assessing whether repairs can be carried out before SS4.
The incident means Ogier's VW team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala has moved into the lead, but M-Sport Ford driver Thierry Neuville is closing on him and is only five seconds adrift.
If Ogier can continue, his delay is likely to drop him outside the top 10.
