Tin-top experts to return with Renault?

The RML outfit wiped the floor with the all-conquering Nissan Primeras in the 1999 series but have taken a sabbatical this year for want of a manufacturer with which to work. Renault also pulled out of the BTCC and the end of last year, citing rising costs and the imminent arrival of its Laguna replacement.

An RML spokesman denied any official contact with Renault but said: "We're likely to be involved in the BTCC next year. Hopefully we'll be able to start the new era in a winning way with a new manufacturer."

It is unsure as to which model the French manufacturer will want to use in the series. The Clio does not meet the BTCC minimum length requirements but the Megane is deemed to be a possibility. The most likely candidate however, is the revised Laguna which is due to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September.

When questioned, Renault were suitably unforthcoming with information. A spokeswoman said: "As yet, nobody has made any concrete decisions."
