Assen MotoGP: Andrea Dovizioso and Hector Barbera penalised for spat

Andrea DoviziosoAndrea Dovizioso and Hector Barbera have both been docked one penalty point following their on-track MotoGP qualifying spat at Assen.

Barbera was adjudged to have impeded Dovizioso's Ducati during the Italian's first out-lap on new tyres, riding in what governing body the FIM deemed an "irresponsible manner."

Dovizioso then kicked out at Barbera's Avintia FTR-Kawasaki, an action the FIM labelled "prejudicial to the interests of the sport."

Both men earned one penalty point for the respective transgressions.

Under MotoGP's newly-introduced penalty system riders can earn up to 10 points, with sanctions applied at certain thresholds.

Any rider reaching four penalty points starts the next race from the back of the grid, while seven points lead to a pitlane start and 10 points a race ban.

Neither rider lodged an appeal against the ruling.

Barbera will start Saturday's Dutch TT from 14th, one spot ahead of Dovizioso, for whom 15th represents a career-low qualifying performance in MotoGP.
