Sauber rookie Esteban Gutierrez not worried about critics

Esteban GutierrezEsteban Gutierrez says he is only focused on his own and the Sauber team's perception of how he is faring in his rookie season rather than worrying about external critics.

The Mexican has had a low-key start to his Formula 1 career. After seven races, he has yet to score a point or outqualify more experienced team-mate Nico Hulkenberg.

Gutierrez admitted that until he is regularly in the points, it is unlikely he will get wider credit, but says his priority is making sure Sauber is satisfied and knowing he has given his best.

"When you're fighting in the top 10, people look at you more and you show more," he said.

"I'm not here to show the people what I can do, I'm just here to do what I want to achieve.

"I'm working to my realities at the moment. My job at the moment is to work with the team to try to get to that window of performance.

"That's my focus and that's what I want to achieve not only to show that I can accomplish the results, but for ourselves."

Esteban Gutierrez, Sauber, Canadian GP 2013, MontrealHe believes his driving and feedback have both steadily improved in recent races, and has faith that Sauber will start moving forwards in the next phase of the season.

"I've been feeling able and confident to push, and for me personally that's an improvement and a good step," Gutierrex said.

"I can understand what's happening with the car a lot more. Communication has been improving.

"I think we are working in a very good direction and that's how we're going to make the next steps.

"In the next few races I think something good is coming."
