Wiggins joins Bettenhausen

The former boss of the Pacific Grand Prix team has taken control of Bettenhausen Motorsports

Keith Wiggins is negotiating to become a part-owner of the struggling outfit. Team founder Tony Bettenhausen was killed in a plane crash before the start of the season.

Wiggins took Pacific in Formula One in 1994 after a successful Formula 3000 programme, but the team dropped out with massive debts after just two seasons at the back of the grid.

He subsequently worked for chassis manufacturer Lola, but split with the company a month ago. He made his first appearance with Bettenhausen at last weekend's Michigan 500.

"It's nice to be back in competition," Wiggins said. "F1 was out of reach, Champ Cars is the next best thing.

"I'm taking an overviewing role this year and looking at the chassis and engine options for 2001."

Bettenhausen driver Michel Jourdain Jr has struggled with the team's Lola-Mercedes package so far this season and languishes in 22nd position in the CART standings. The team has not won a race since joining the championship in 1986.
