Townsend Bell secures Panther Indianapolis 500 seat

Townsend BellTownsend Bell's Indianapolis 500 return has been confirmed, with the 38-year-old having been signed by Panther Racing to drive the team's second car at the Brickyard later this month.

The deal reunites the 2001 Indy Lights champion with the team that he began his IndyCar career with after moving across from Champ Car. He contested 11 races for Panther between 2004 and 2005.

"It's really exciting to be back with Panther," said Bell when he announced the deal during NBC Sport's coverage of this weekend's IndyCar race in Sao Paulo.

"I even wore my throwback uniform from when I was with Panther in 2004 [for the seat fitting]."

Bell has made six starts at Indianapolis, with a best result of fourth with KV Racing Technology in 2009.

His deal, which will be backed by Dreamworks' Indy 500-themed Turbo movie, comes just days after Pippa Mann was confirmed for a third Dale Coyne entry at Indy.

Several other drivers are also working on deals for Indy, with 2004 race-winner Buddy Rice reportedly close to a deal with Schmidt.
