DTM champions Spengler and Ravaglia swap cars

Spengler, who triumphed last year in BMW's first factory DTM campaign since 1992, drove an M3 E30 like the one that Ravaglia took to the 1989 crown. The car carried the same livery Spengler used last year.

Ravaglia, meanwhile, drove Spengler's 2012 M3, which was painted in BMW Motorsport's traditional while, blue and red colours.

They held a special one-lap race, with Spengler being given a 23-second head start to commemorate the 23-year gap between his title and Ravaglia's.

Ravaglia won, however, passing his rival in the stadium section.

"The first time I saw the 1989 BMW M3 in my design, with my name and the #1, it was an amazing feeling," said Spengler.

"Because the BMW M3 from back then is so light, it is almost like driving a kart. I had great fun until Roberto passed me in the Sachs corner."

Fifty-five-year-old Ravaglia, who won seven major touring car crowns during his racing career, added: "It was great to be back in Hockenheim after all these years, and I really enjoyed returning at the wheel of a DTM car.

"The BMW M3 DTM is a fantastic car. Its black livery is great, but I think our old design rather suits it too.

"I initially had to get used to the low seat position, but after a few laps that ceased to be a problem."
