Dumbreck crash halts practice
Jo Winkelhock got Opel back on top in the second free practice session at the Norisring on Saturday before the session was stopped after Peter Dumbreck crashed his Mercedes at high speed
DTM joint series leader Bernd Schneider and Stefano Modena set the pace in the opening minutes of the rain-affected session, before Winkelhock moved to the top of the time sheets with 30 minutes of practice remaining.
Several drivers ran off the track in a bid to find the limit, but it was Dumbreck who came off worst when he lost control of his Mercedes on the start-finish straight and spun into the pit wall on the right.
The high-speed impact spun him back across the track before he ended up facing the right way in the middle of the circuit. Dumbreck was able to get out of the car unaided, but the front of his Mercedes was badly damaged.
The session was immediately red flagged and the remaining 15 minutes of practice cancelled as the organisers made efforts to keep the timetable running smoothly.
