Porsche to re-enter GT2 racing?

The Weissach company's 911 was all-conquering in the GT2 class until rendered obselete by the Chrysler Viper GTS-R which came on the scene in 1997. Porsche currently dominates the GT3 class, but has had no suitable car to take on the Vipers and Chevrolet Corvettes that are the present top cars in the class.

According to this week's Autosport magazine, Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking has insisted that Porsche will replace the 911 GT2, which is now out of production - though Porsche's official line is that this would not be cost effective. However, the emergence of the new S1, as it is codenamed, may change that, giving Porsche a suitable and potentially competitive basis for a competition car.

The hi-tech supercar is likely to be based on the 911GT1 homologation special which Porsche built some examples of in order to qualify for the old GT1 class. Its construction may prove a pitfall, however, as the GT2 class currently does not allow carbon fibre chassis.
