United States GP: Ricciardo hopes Toro Rosso gains amid tyre woe

Daniel Ricciardo, Toro Rosso, Austin 2012Daniel Ricciardo believes the potential for a tyre temperature-influenced lottery in the United States Grand Prix gives Toro Rosso hope of snatching a good result.

Pirelli has conceded its choice of medium and hard tyres turned out to be too conservative for the Austin venue's Formula 1 debut.

Many drivers complained that the dusty track surface and low temperatures made it impossible to get tyres into their operating windows early in runs during Friday practice.

Asked by AUTOSPORT if he felt this could be a good thing for Toro Rosso, Ricciardo replied: "I guess it always leaves a bit of hope. You feel you can luck into a result a bit more.

"We did a run [in practice] and didn't understand why we were one to two seconds off the pace I'd done on the previous run. It's very sensitive to track temperature, tyre pressure, all these.

"Knowing it's a bit of a lottery is nice."

Ricciardo believes Toro Rosso's pace will be around its habitual midfield mark, but hopes it could benefit if others struggle in the conditions.

"We're sort of hoping something could happen and we jump up a few places," he said.

"We should be where we normally are."
