Williams close to Button decision

Jenson Button says his Williams future is close to being decided

The 20-year-old British driver's chances of remaining at Williams F1 may have improved after team boss Frank Williams stated he had little chance of signing CART champion Juan Pablo Montoya.

Williams said he was 'sure' Montoya's boss Chip Ganassi would not release the Colombian this year - 12 months before his contract is due to expire. However, as reported in Autosport magazine (June 8), sources within Williams F1 have insisted that Ganassi will release Montoya when push comes to shove.

"Hopefully the decision will be made in the next two weeks, maybe three. There is no deadline, but hopefully a decision will be made in that time frame," said Button.

If body language and mood are any gauge, then the smiling Button believes he will be staying at Williams next year.

"I have made it clear that this is where I want to be next year. We'll have to wait and see what happens," he said.

Button admitted earlier this week that he has talked to other teams just in case.

"Teams talk to drivers and drivers talk to teams - that is normal at this time of year. Before I decide what I am doing I have to know whether I am here. If I am it's excellent. If I'm not, we'll have to sort out some other things.

"Frank has not given me any indication when this decision will come and I am sure he is not going to give me any indication now."
