Carlos Sainz Jr to skip British Formula 3 finale in favour of European quest

Carlos Sainz Jr, Carlin, Silverstone 2012Red Bull junior driver Carlos Sainz Jr will pass up his slim chance to win the British Formula 3 International Series title by skipping the final round at Donington Park on September 29/30.

The 18-year-old Spaniard will instead contest the clashing FIA European/Euro Series F3 round at Valencia in his Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen.

Sainz is equal fourth in the British rankings, 56 points behind leader Jazeman Jaafar with just 63 available. Even third-placed Jack Harvey - 33 points in front – is virtually out of reach.

In the FIA European standings, Sainz is 51 points adrift of leader Daniel Juncadella, with 100 available over the final two weekends at Valencia and Hockenheim, and is just 16 and a half behind second-placed Raffaele Marciello.

About the decision, in which Red Bull had the final say, team boss Trevor Carlin said: "We all looked at where he's at in both championships and took the logical decision."

Carlin will not substitute Sainz for Donington, as he uses the same car in all three F3 championships.
