Stephane Ratel's SRO group to step down as FIA GT1 World Championship

Stephane Ratel

Stephane Ratel's SRO Motorsports Group will step down as the promoter of the FIA GT1 World Championship at the end of the year.

Ratel, founder and CEO of the group, informed the GT Commission of his decision at a meeting in Paris this week.

As revealed by last week's AUTOSPORT magazine, Ratel had gone into the meeting with a proposal to combine the FIA GT1 and European GT3 grids in order to ensure the survival of the world championship. The move would have meant wholesale calendar changes for the second half of this year.

Following the meeting however, Ratel made the decision to end SRO's role as promoter of both championships, effective from 2013.

The group will continue to promote the remainder of this year's championship, which reached its halfway point with a visit to the Algarve circuit on July 8.
