Indy Lights frontrunner Sebastian Saavedra will join the IndyCar field at next month's Sears Point race in a car run jointly by Andretti Autosport and AFS Racing.
The Colombian drove an AFS/Andretti car at this year's Indianapolis 500, and AFS team owner Gary Peterson said that the outing at the California road course was a step towards a full-time deal in 2013.
"I'm very proud of Sebastian," he said. "Clearly, deciding to run the full season of Indy Lights was the right one. He's been able to gauge the up-and-coming drivers while having an opportunity to run with the IndyCar drivers at the Andretti Autosport team. He's got more oval and road course experience, test driven the IndyCars, and run the Indy 500.
"Now he's getting another IndyCar opportunity at Sears. Everything we're doing is putting Seb in an excellent position to build upon his future and help set the stage for a great AFS Racing/Andretti Autosport 2013 programme."
Saavedra, who won the 2009 Indy Lights Rookie of the Year honours, returned to Lights this season with Andretti's team after racing in IndyCar last year with Conquest.
