Jorge Lorenzo rues losing near-certain Mugello MotoGP pole to electronic problem

Jorge LorenzoJorge Lorenzo was confident he would have been able to secure pole position for the Italian Grand Prix had he not encountered an apparent electronic problem at the end of qualifying.

The practice pacesetter and MotoGP championship leader was on a lap that looked quick enough to reclaim pole from Dani Pedrosa when he aborted his run and returned to the pits.

Lorenzo said that his Yamaha's engine performance ha appeared to fade, with initial reports suggesting an electronic rather than engine issue.

"It seems we have some electronic problems," said Lorenzo. "We have to check but I'm very disappointed because I was in pole position with this lap and not making any mistakes.

"I think the second lap was a very good lap, but two laps from the end, the engine started to fail a little bit, and finally in the last corner, it was completely off, so I had to go into the pits.

"We hope to solve this problem for tomorrow."

Lorenzo was still able to hold on to second on the grid behind Pedrosa's Honda.
