AJ Allmendinger has been temporarily suspended from NASCAR following a positive test for forbidden substances.
The Penske driver will not compete in Saturday night's Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona after being notified of his 'A' sample having tested positive following a random control last week at Kentucky.
Allmendinger will be able to request a test of his 'B' sample over the next 72 hours, which could make the suspension indefinite if it also fails.
"NASCAR will follow its policies and procedures set forth in the rule book in dealing with this matter," said NASCAR in a statement issued less than two hours before Saturday's race.
Sam Hornish Jr, who finished 10th on Friday in the Nationwide Series race at Daytona, was drafted to take the wheel of the #22 Dodge for Saturday evening's Cup round.
"NASCAR has a strict drug testing programme that Penske Racing fully supports," Penske Racing said in a statement. "Penske Racing will work with NASCAR through this process and its next steps."
Back in 2009 Allmendinger was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently placed on probation and fined US 10.000 by NASCAR, although he was not prevented from racing.
