Tony Kanaan predicts that practice two will feel like qualifying under Iowa IndyCar format

Tony Kanaan expects this weekend's second IndyCar Series practice session at Iowa Speedway to become a de facto qualifying battle due to its role in establishing the allocations for the qualifying heat races

Drivers will be allocated places in the heats based on their practice times in the second session, with the eight fastest drivers earning the right to race for pole in the third and final heat race.

Kanaan, who won at Iowa in 2010 from 15th on the grid, believes that the importance of final practice will force teams to approach the session completely differently to how they would otherwise.

"The second session is going to turn into a qualifying match, because everyone is going to try to be in the top eight," said the Brazilian.

"Although it is a short oval you can draft a lot here, so you are going to see a lot of people trying to put a good lap together at the beginning of the session on a good set of tyres to be able to make it to the top eight. It's going to be exciting.

"It's a lot more risk, because you're going to have to stake it out there for a longer period of time - 45 minutes. But you're going to do that, then you're going to do a bit of race work, and maybe towards the end you'll try another qualifying run if you're not in the top eight. A lot of people are going to try to do that."
