NASCAR Nextel Cup points' leader Jeff Gordon will be able to race next weekend at Infineon Raceway after his daughter was born today in New York.
His wife Ingrid Vandebosch gave birth to the couple's first child, Ella Sofia Gordon, who was born at 9:09 a.m. on Wednesday, weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce and was 20 inches long.
"It's been an absolutely incredible experience," Gordon said. "Ingrid came through amazingly and we're both really happy and overjoyed. We can't wait to get home and start our lives together as a family."
Gordon, a five-time winner at the Infineon Raceway road course, had planned for veteran Mark Martin to take the wheel of his No 24 DuPont Chevrolet if his baby was born during the race weekend.
He will now be able to defend his lead in the Nextel Cup standings on the track and pursue his fifth victory of the season at one of his favorite races.
